Humorous Hair Life!

Hair Related Emotions.

Ladies, do you have these?  Cause I do.

In fact, anyone close to me could tell you that if my hair is having an "issue",  on any given day, that it could  will alter my "mood" for the rest of the day.

Yes I know, this is vanity at its best isn't it? This is not one of my shining attributes! BUT for the sake of  humor, I am willing to share that about myself, with you, to set you up for my post today!

Please note, although I like my hair to look "in place" (and yes I use way too much hairspray) , I am far from "hair savvy"!

Here I will prove it to you... let's take a journey down Julie's Hair Life!

This should get a few giggles! :)

Honestly, I kind of like this hairdo! Obviously my mother styled it!
Go Mom! I can not believe how LIGHT my hair is though!

Ok, I am the baby in this picture, with the greased down head of hair looking extremely frightened and dazed! I am inserting this picture not for that fact, but I wanted to share that our mother used to put curlers in our hair. You know like all good mom's of the 60's & 70's did ! My sisters were the recipients of it in this photo! I honestly could not find my photos of me with "curler hair". I am hoping my sisters won't disown me after this! :)

I look like I am trying to keep from telling something
I am not suppose too!  I would classify this as a
"bad hair day". School pictures of course! Moving on!

During this hairstyle, I learned that it is better to have hair
ON my neck than not!  What was I thinking???  Reminds me of a giraffe!
(That's my step dad :)

Perm Perm Perm.....Senior Pictures...

Ok, I know the eyeshadow is SHOCKINGLY beautiful, but try to focus on the
FULL VOLUME HAIR!  It was the late 80's people.....
By the way, that beautiful bundle of joy, is my oldest daughter!

Mullet.... not even going to say anything else......
The beautiful bundle of joy, is my middle daughter!

After the Mullet years,  perhaps I should stick with something like one of these on my head!

Fast forward to 2008......
I think this one is so - so.....

It was about 7 months after this I got the "itch" for a change!
I don't know if it was because I was a new mother (again) or wanted to look
younger or wanted to try the new styles out. Who knows!

But since this time I have basically wore my hair straightened, highlighted,
and longer like below. (This was at our Fall Friend Gathering this past weekend,
that post is coming soon!)

Ok the itch I mentioned.... it arrived once again!  My hair was driving me nuts and a little too long and so when I went to my hair cut I said with alot of gusto! " OK cut some length off!".

You know when you get a new haircut and you are in the stylist chair and they are done & ask you what you think? You are feeling all excited and thinking "oh I can do this, I love it!"  I felt that way .... for about 20 minutes.

While driving home I felt the wind on my neck and there wasn't any hair falling in my face. Freaking out began and panic struck! But I shifted gears after arriving home and my husband and daughter expressed how they liked it, so I took to ignoring that I ever got a haircut. No mirrors in sight, no thinking about it! Nothing!

Then when I woke early this morning I literally jumped out of bed to go wet my hair and GET IT STYLED! That way I could see the true results!

Hair grows back right?.......

Pretty fast right..........

How fast?????..........

Ok here you go! I won't make you wait any longer!

On a serious note,
Do I like my haircut, yes.
Do I wish it was about an inch longer, yes.
Will it grow, yes.
Do I love how fast it is to fix in the morning, YES!YES! YES!
Does it matter to my husband if my hair is long or shot, not really.
Did my 4 year old look at me when I came home from getting it cut and it wasn't even styled & say, "mommy I like your hair", yes.
Did it warm my heart and make me want to squeeze her, of course!
Is it different, yes.
Is that ok, most definitely!

Hair grows, times change, things change, as you can see from Julie's Hair Life!

(In fact, I bet some of you have a few photos from your life, that you look at now, and say what was I thinking!?) And that is OK!

My bad hair days are not as important as they once were, so my vanity is less, which in turn is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, my hairspray supply will probably never be lacking! :)  Just ask my husband and kids!

Do you have a hair story to share???

I'd love to hear it, I'd love to see pictures but I won't ask for those!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope this brought some giggles to your day!

Things that brought me Joy!

To be honest, yesterday was a rough day for me, but as always God's light shown through eventually!

Things that brought me joy were.......

  • Seeing this on my daughter's (KVH/California Gal) facebook status last night.
Not that I want my daughter homesick, but it's nice as a
Mom to be needed, even when they are almost 20 years old!

Attending my last bible study for the season at this location with some ladies
I really enjoy and learn from on a weekly basis.
I thank them for allowing me to be a part of their lives!

Dancing with these two this morning to a beautiful song!

What has brought you joy recently?

Thanks for stopping by!

Memory Verse- 6

I hope I have not scared most of you off with the last Memory Verse! :)

It was lengthy but I hope you were able to master it!  It took definitely more focus for me but I did finally master it!

You will be glad to know that I have chosen one this week that is shorter.  Personally, I feel it is one that should defiantly be memorized.  In my daily life it will come in handy to pull from the rolodex of memory verses in my mind.

Good luck to you all! I have great faith that you will master this in no time at all!

Thanks for joining me once again!

Julie

Tailgate Dinners & Sunsets For Dessert!

This past weekend Milton and his dad began harvesting Milo (Grain sorghum).  I decided Saturday evening I didn't really feel like preparing a home-cooked meal for supper. PV was out riding with Milton in the combine anyway, so I decided to call an order into our local burger joint!

So our dining out experience was literally that! DINING OUT!

It was ate in the countryside, next to a Milo field and combine, while sitting on a tailgate enjoying the fall evening as the sun set. There was only a slight breeze, which is not the normal if you have ever been in Kansas for very long!

How about that for ambiance people!? I couldn't have ordered a better dining experience!

Having supper together at a decent hour has always been an important thing to me.  So bringing supper to the field and eating together is a natural choice for me. I am able to still bring the family together and be united in our day, even if only for a short period of time. I think connection between family is essential to build a solid foundation for not only us as the family unit, but our children's future lives.

Bringing food to the field also brings back childhood memories for me. Mostly my grandmother fixing meals and taking them to the field for family while they harvested the crops. So I got to take a stroll down memory lane tonight!

Another wonderful experience from this evening.......

And as I was standing with camera in hand, (of course) I looked up to see this.

It just took my breath away. The sunset behind her & her "deep in thought" face! I just think it's a lovely presentation of beauty (and not just because my daughter is in it either!) I love the way the sun is in the background and beaming with warmth!

Moments of beauty can be found in lots of places, along a roadside, on a tailgate, in the supermarket, in the smiling eyes of an elderly man, in a baby's giggle, etc.

I'm sure you get my drift.  Let's  just  decide right now we will open our eyes and take in the beauty around us this week!!

And when you look in the mirror today and see yourself, be sure to recognize it there too.

Because you ARE beautiful!

Thanks for stopping by!

I did touch up the first photo with one technique. But I think the original is pretty cool too!

Joy Joy Joy (from my weekend)

Receiving Joy is one of best things in life! Wouldn't you agree???
Here are things that brought me joy over the weekend!

I hope you had a joyous one! Feel free to share your Joys!

This was by far the BIGGEST joy all weekend!

Receiving this picture message on my phone at 2:30am Sunday morning!
Our son in law returning from deployment in Afghanistan!

Spending time this weekend with my little girl!

Annual trip to the pumpkin patch!

Non-photographed moments of joy were:

Reading Galatians in the quiet morning.
I called Milton while he was cutting Milo, PV was riding along with him, I could hear her singing away in the background!
Having a couple of unexpected visitors come see us Saturday night!

I hope your weekend was a joyous one!

Thanks for stopping by!

What's Your Entertaining Style?

I think I may have mentioned previously, I'm having a Fall Friend Gathering next weekend!

I am getting pretty excited for the opportunity to entertain this particular group of friends. We have not all been together in one place since last February! It's always a great time when we meet up!

This year it's a Appetizer and Dessert Tasting!

Invitations have been mailed, dishes bought, recipes chosen and all but one has been through our "test run of making"!  That task will be done in the next couple days! I know!  I am cutting it pretty close!

Friends, are you wondering what will fill these cute little dessert dishes and plate?!

You will have to continue to read....... I do love to tease! :)

Today we unpacked these cuties that I found on clearance while shopping in August!  SCORE! I was excited about saving money almost as much as having my friends over!

Here is my lovely assistant unpacking them for me to wash!

Ok, I just can't resist, this is her cooking breakfast today with me.... we had pancakes!

I told her this morning, before long, when you can read, you will be able to make them all by yourself!

Sniff Sniff...     Sniff Sniff...

Ok only for a few seconds did I sniff sniff , because I then had this thought......

SHE CAN MAKE ME BREAKFAST IN BED!

Yippee!!!! (I'm currently dancing the jig!)

Nice imaginery once again huh????

Well maybe this will help get that image out of your mind my dear followers!

Check out our test run!

YUM YUM YUM!

Seriously not only looks pretty, but tastes yummy... did I say that already???

Here's another angle just in case you couldn't see the yumminess it encompasses!

When I prepare a recipe and it turns out not only tasting lovely but looks it too, I just can't help but get EXCITED!

My mind starts going ninety to nothing on how I can share with others.  Let me attempt to explain in words how my mind goes...

Hum... I wonder if I could have a bunch of ladies from church over and serve them desserts like this?  What would be the purpose of our gathering, do we need one? Would they come?.... hum.....

How about a group of my closest girlfriends, I could lay out a spread.... and we could spend an afternoon giggling and relaxing... I wonder if they would come.......if we can all figure out a date???

I wonder if I invite all my sisters, mother, daughters, their kids, and have a craft day and create food like this, would they come?  That would be a nice tradition......hum.....

Couples from church that we don't know very well would they enjoy a gathering of this sort? Would they come? Would they enjoy it?

Now, imagine those being said without a breath between and running through my mind in about 6 seconds!

I have these "thoughts" often but haven't acted on them much. For me I think I let time get away from me and I allow fear of someone not liking my idea take over. Do you have fears of entertaining others?

I want to share the goodness from our blessed life.  We have more than enough food in our home, more than enough room to entertain, and it feels so good to just be with others!
I need to keep that in the forefront of my mind and not let time slip away!

Do you enjoy entertaining in your home?  What is your favorite type of entertaining? Relatives only, large dinner for friends, or more intimate with just one couple, a full meal, a football tailgate party, bbq style, buffet style or everyone bring a dish kinda gathering?

Ok, I won't make you wait any longer!  I am sharing the menu now, recipes will not be shared until after the gathering!

So glad you stopped by! Please be sure to share your entertaining fears and joys!

Little Seeds to Grow

I've mentioned that I attend a weekly bible study. I wanted to share the experience I had at this week's meeting.

(If you are interested in following the leaders blog on the study you can find it here.)

When the passage below was read I felt like I was stumbling inside myself and I was/am hoping none of the ladies noticed!

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Galatians 5:22

I am going to be honest here, I was stumbling because I didn't realize the fruit of the spirit encompassed all these things. I had heard the phrase fruit of the Spirit, but did not know exactly what it was, beyond except maybe love , joy, and peace (and that's a slim maybe).

As a Christian I am not sure I should be admitting that, but you know what, I am guessing there are others out there feeling the same way!  That their lack of knowledge of God means they should keep their mouths and questions to themselves, so not to say the incorrect thing.  Obviously this is a sure way to keep from learning, and where can we go if we aren't learning? Whether it be God's word or anything else for that matter!

It was stated that the Spirit didn't give just one or two of these to us baptized children, but ALL of them!  The study guide stated "it's time to start using the fruit the Holy Spirit has already placed in our heart!" This ignited something in me and I am a tad excited to learn more about each one.

Currently, I feel the patience and self control ones, are the ones that need the most growth within me!  Or maybe I should say... restraint with me!  Anyone with me on this one? Do I hear an AMEN!?

Anyway, I thought to myself, this is something I should be reading every morning, perhaps I should use lipstick & write it on the large mirror in my bathroom or can I buy a ringtone for my cell phone singing this verse???

I was happy and in awe that these were WITHIN me!  That I could grow them and by the end of the study I was feeling pretty motivated.

Then as I was traveling home, I became somber.  Something hit me, something that made me sad. No, it wasn't that I doubted these were within me, or the thought of how much I had lacked in displaying them in my life.

The thought that brought on the somber feelings was....."I spent so much time in my life not knowing God."

Since most of you don't know me or perhaps you do but don't know my faith journey, I feel I need to share it.  To better explain why I think this entered my mind on this night of excitement.

In my childhood I think I only participated in one Christmas church program, and a handful of Sunday school and church services.  The foundation in my home was not that of God.  We prayed at each meal but I wasn't raised with a church home or family. I am not blaming, I am just stating truth.

In my middle school years I can recall only two times of experiences with God or about God. One time I was an 8th grader in school  The subject of God came up amongst the kids and I felt panic gathering in my veins instantly! I just knew someone was going to turn to me and expect me to know something about God!  I knew nothing!

The other time was within the same year, I had just gotten off the phone with my aunt.  She had told me that my cousin that was my age had become ill and they weren't sure he was going to make it through it.  I hung up the phone and stood there praying to God, begging him to heal my cousin.  I don't recall ever praying prior to this in this manner.  My cousin made it through by the way and is an adult with a family! Praise God!

Even at this middle school age, I recall feeling like I was missing something by not knowing about God.

I wasn't baptized until I was 22.  I did believe and I did accept Jesus Christ as my Savior at this time.  But I don't feel I really comprehended what it meant and mostly I didn't "feed" my knowledge.

By 24, I was attending a different church that I raised my older daughters in and came to love the people, the church, and the time I spent there.  It brought a deeper growth in my faith life no doubt, and I will always treasure the experience.

After Milton & I married we were dividing our time between two churches with two different beliefs.  I want to take a moment to thank my husband for making that sacrifice for me and my older daughters.  I understand now it was a sacrifice for him, and I respect him for holding true to his beliefs at that time, yet supporting our family as a united couple.

When I was 38 and our youngest daughter was born, I transferred my membership to my current church home. The one my husband has attended his entire life.  He heard God's word from his mother's womb in this church.   (To be honest, this makes me feel alittle envious, always has.)
But I wanted my youngest daughter to grow up in one church and I felt I was being led to this place.

Now that all being said, my somber thoughts and feelings were ones that came from from not really knowing about God the first 22 years of my life I believe.

I won't let myself dwell on that fact too long.  Just an evening or perhaps one entire day. I will now look to the blessings that I have come to realize.

#1- God was with me the entire time those first 22 years of life, as he will be forever more.

#2- God is providing me with a welcoming church family that will aide me in learning his Word and caring for me and my family.  He has also given me a place to reciprocate these things.

#3 - Those little seeds of fruit, the Spirit placed within me....... when I read them, they make me smile. (Because I have been given the opportunity to grow them!)

Thanks for allowing me to write about my life experiences and pray you find some inspiration from this post!

Don't be afraid to learn, ask, and share!

Topic or Verse....Hum....

Hello People!

Ok time to get down to business!

I am inviting you, to participate with me, in choosing the future bible verses to be memorized.

Some of you are probably clapping and cheering at this moment because the one for this week is SO LONG! I was feeling over confident apparently when choosing it! BUT I am in for the long haul, how about you!!? I have great faith you all can master it! Go Team Go! (I think we need a team name don't you??) LOL

Ok here we go!

Please comment below one of the following (remember you can always do it anonymously too)

A "topic" - for example worry, love, joy, patience, parenting, sin, strength, guidance, etc.  Then I will research and find one for that topic.

OR

An actual bible verse that you either have enjoyed, feel it would be beneficial to the group, or want to memorize but never have.

Then I will organize them and use those in future weeks for memorization!

Please post  your comment by Sunday at noon as I normally work on it later that day for the upcoming week.

I can't wait to see what you share! I am VERY excited about this!

Rainy Day Lessons

On this rainy Saturday our family decided to spend the day in our Entertaining Kitchen!

We had an assortment of recipes we planned to prepare!
Come on in, take a seat at the gathering spot we call the bar,
and take a view of our fun time!

Here's a list of what we made!

Apple butter (first time ever)
Whiskey Mustard Meatballs
Pistachio Salad
Cinnamon Rolls
Lemon Zucchini Bread
Elk Chili
Potato Soup

I had some good help, let me introduce you to my "little chefs"!
PV and ES
Daughter and Grandaughter

They were quite the helpers let me tell you!
PV said they were making Banana Cake in this photo!

And my talented assistant! MILTON!

Milton & I enjoy cooking together and since it
rained he was available to help out!
I know, I know! I am a lucky woman!

Ella looks pretty serious in this shot!
Papa must have had something important to say!

I will forewarn you now, we do not have step by step photos.
In fact, we don't even have final photos of some of the food.
We were too busy eating it all up and chasing a 4 yr old & 21 month old!

 Apples for our butter!
Did you know it takes ALOT Of apples to make apple butter?
The recipe we used called for 5 pounds!
This was our first time making apple butter.
Tasting will occur soon!

Milton did a great job at peeling, coring, and chopping apples today!
Then we cooked them down and put them through a blender.
Then we cooked them for what seemed like FOREVER!
But the house smelled WONDERFUL all day long!

Finished product!

Cinnamon Rolls & Lemon Zucchini Bread

The Cinnamon Roll recipe I use is here.   We really enjoy these!

The Lemon Zucchini bread recipe you can find here.

Lessons I learned this day:
Do not choose too many recipes to prepare in one day and over do it!
If you do over do it, coax your partner into rubbing your feet that evening!
Little girl messes aren't really a big deal when you see how happy they are to be with you!
We need another one of these for our kitchen! (Fyi, when the word is different colored, click on it)
Spending time together creating something makes for great memories!
Sometimes your husband is right... even in the kitchen! :)

Do you have any fun experiences in the kitchen you care to share with us?  We would love to hear them!

Do you have a recipe you like to recommend to me? I love to cook and welcome all ideas!

Thanks for visiting!

Julie

Memory Verse - Week 5

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Don't panic, yes it's alittle long but I know WE can do it!  I am here to cheer you on!

When I was researching and praying for a verse, this one was presented to me twice, under two different subjects in my Concordance.  So I felt moved that it was the one for this week! That and I think it will be a well used verse in my future! :)

I wanted to take a moment and express my thankfulness for all of you that are joining me on this Memorization Bandwagon! When I am struggling to get the words down, it truly is helpful to know there are others out there working on it too! Thanks so much for joining me!

Be sure to check back this week, as I plan to solicit some help from you all! More to come on that!

Good luck memorizing & may you find joy in all your days!

Farming Calendar

If you are not familiar with the farming community you may not be aware of how long it takes for a crop to grow.  We thought we would share a "farming calendar" to help you know when we plant & harvest (approximately) at our farm in Central Kansas!

There are lots of factors that go into planting and harvesting, the weather being the most evident, and also if it is an irrigated or non-irrigated crop just to name a couple.

Wheat

Sowed/Planted - Early October
If we plan to graze cattle on the wheat, we usually sow it Mid-September.
Harvested - June

When Milton is sowing wheat,  he applies fertilizer on it at the same time.  In addition to this application of fertilizer another one will be applied mid winter by a local company.

Corn

Planted - Late March - Early April
Harvested - August - September

When Milton plants corn, he does apply fertilizer.  Depending on how the crop is doing when it is growing, a later application may be needed.

Grain Sorghum (Milo)

Planted - Early May - Mid June
Harvested- August - October  Most of the time, it is harvested in October at our farm.

When milo is planted,  fertilizer is applied at same time.  Normally, that is the only time it is done.

Soybeans

Planted - Mid May
Harvested - September

When Milton plants soybeans he does not apply fertilizer at the same time.  From past experience and knowledge soybeans do not require as much fertilizer to produce a good crop.

We also wanted to explain what "double crop" means.  Double crop is more than one crop harvested in a calendar year.  So for example, Milton harvested wheat in June 2012 and then planted soybeans in the same field in June 2012.  The soybeans were harvested October 2012, so the soybeans are classified as double crop.

I will list some of the benefits of double cropping.  It changes rotation of your crop on that particular field.  Meaning instead of having wheat followed by wheat, it is wheat followed by soybeans or milo. It aides in reducing weed pressure. Hopefully the double crop will produce well and the farmer can have some added income.  Unfortunately, this year due to dry conditions and the early freeze we have had, the soybeans did not produce a crop. So much so that we will not even harvest them.  It's a chance we take but most of farming is about risk taking!  Farming is a way of life and although there are ups and downs, like everything in life, it's one that our family cherishes.

Thanks for stopping by!
